Chatham Marketplace Ends Statement

CM exists so that owners and community members will have access to a vibrant local resource that provides sustainable products, education and cooperative ownership leading to health, environmental, economic, social and cultural benefits.

Specifically, our patrons will experience the following benefits:

Health

Customers are empowered to pursue their personal health goals via a natural, food-based process
Owners learn to cook for health
Chatham residents have improved soil and water from an increase in organic/sustainable farming resulting in improved community-wide health

Environment

The larger community increases its environmental knowledge and environmental pressures are reduced by the co-ops use of green building techniques, recycling/composting, choices of suppliers, product selection and choices of materials and supplies within the store.

Economic

The local economy is strengthened by job creation, purchasing fairly from local sustainable sources and contributing tax revenues.
The public at large and the ownership learn about the benefits of cooperative economics and become more active in cooperative ownership.
The sustainable movement nationally and internationally is expanded through the co-op’s fair trade and organic purchases.
Downtown development is increased by the economic presence of CM
The local currency, PLENTY, is buoyed by its acceptance for purchases and payments at the co-op.

Social

Racial and ethnic harmonization is realized through a diverse staff and ownership and community outreach.
People come to CM to congregate and relax.
Local social groups and causes including but not limited to environmental organizations, school groups, athletic groups, local theatre and community based non-profits are supported by CM hence expanding the social good.
A nurturing relationship is created between the co-op and homebound and elderly owners allowing them to participate more fully in the community.

Cultural

Patrons enjoy a vibrant, alternative shopping experience rich in diverse cultural experiences.
A multigenerational and multicultural community is enhanced and nurtured through programs, events and services offered by the co-op.
